Dielectric Testing

The engineering and inspection services you can count on to keep your employees and your assets safe.

Expect Value.

For over 25 years, Kova has been leading the industry with our quality equipment inspections. We are now offering dielectric testing of mobile equipment to complement our structural inspections. Testing can be completed at your facility as a standalone service or combined with our structural inspections.

What is dielectric testing?

Dielectric testing is a process of applying high voltage to an insulating component to determine the electrical insulating strength in a fibreglass boom, bucket, and liners. These tests are typically performed on mobile equipment manufactured for use near power lines and energized power equipment to ensure the safety of the personnel during use of the equipment.

CSA C225, ANSI A92.2 and A10.31 require periodic inspections of aerial devices and digger derricks to ensure that they are safe to operate when in proximity to high voltage power.

Why have your equipment tested?

  • The safety of your employees rests on having your equipment in optimal working order.
  • Normal wear and tear can break down the protective coating (gel coat) allowing the fibreglass to absorb moisture and reduce the insulating resistance. Scheduling your equipment for routine inspections and testing is the best way to ensure that it’s safe.
  • Dielectric testing should be performed annually, after any repairs or replacement of components in the insulating sections, or after an accident.

The Technology

All dielectric testing is performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards (CSA 225, ANSI A92.2 or A10.31). Our experienced technicians use the Phenix portable DC Hipot Tester to check your equipment for any unsafe electrical leakage.

What can we do with the technology?

Dielectric testing can be performed on aerial devices, digger derricks, or other insulating equipment. Components typically tested include:

  • Main Boom
  • Bucket Liner/Platform
  • Fibreglass Jib
  • Live Line Tools
