Structural Engineering Design of An Access Catwalk

PROJECT DETAILS

Project Overview

Kova Engineering (Saskatchewan) Ltd. designed a code-compliant industrial access walkway and stair system within a 1-month accelerated timeline. The solution prioritized safe operator access while navigating spatial constraints through client-collaborative structural planning.

Main Objectives of the Project

Design a walkway and stairs in an industrial setting. The walkway connects to existing platforms and provides access for servicing equipment.  Walkway and stairs are to conform to applicable codes and standards.

Project Description

Site measurements and reference materials were used to determine elevations, connection points and anchor points. The locations of potential interferences were identified and the design was modified to accommodate these interferences.  The design was analyzed, taking into account potential loading configurations, to ensure that the structure was sufficient for the intended loads. The walkway and stairs were modelled in 3-dimensions using Autodesk Inventor. The customer was consulted, using this model as a preview, to ensure that the access walkway design met their needs and provided the access they required. Once approved, an engineer-authenticated drawing set was produced.
